چکیده

We investigated the physiological background to individual variation in basal metabolic rate (BMR) in a laboratory population of a small passerine bird, the Zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata. We especially explored whether food-quality during early development influenced the BMRlater in life. Zebra finches were raised on two different food regimes; one (dlow qualityT) involvingonly mixed seed diet, while the other (dhigh qualityT) in addition including a protein supplement and daily fresh hard-boiled eggs. The different diets were administrated to the birds only during the first 6 weeks of life. At an age of 1.5 to 2 years, and after a breeding period of their own, BMR was measured in all individuals. Food quality had a significant effect on body mass. Adult finches raised on high-quality protein-rich food were significantly heavier (2.2 g for males and 1.9 g for females) than their counterparts raised on low-quality food. Despite this, the BMR of the adult birds did not differ beyond that expected based on variation in body mass alone. Hence, the early feeding regimes, which induced a non-genetic phenotypic variability in body mass, did apparently not induce any long-term changes in body composition or in organ metabolic intensity. First Report of Coccidiosis and Gizzard Erosion in a Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) of Iran

Coccidiosis and gizzard erosion are rare conditions in cage bird. A male zebra finch was presented with a history of watery diarrhea, anorexia, ruffled feathers, weight loss, and lethargy and died finally. Gross necropsy revealed small areas of erosions and hemorrhages on the gizzard wall. The intestine was oedematous. The spleen appeared pale and small. The testes were asymmetric.Histologicall...

Systemic Amyloidosis and Testicular Interstitial Tumor in a Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata): a Case Report in Iran

Systemic amyloidosis and testicular interstitial tumor are rare conditions in birds and this is the first report in Iran. A male zebra finch was presented because of white diarrhea, anorexia, loss of weight and lethargy. At necropsy, the small intestine was edematous and congested. The spleen appeared pale. The liver was large, firm and brown. One testis was cystic and neoplastic and the remain...

Long-term repeatability makes basal metabolic rate a likely heritable trait in the zebra finch Taeniopygia guttata.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a physiological trait believed to show adaptational changes. Few studies have tested whether BMR shows stable between-individual variations. Repeatability indicates that the trait might be heritable and therefore a possible target for natural selection. We tested whether BMR was repeatable over a considerable time of the lifespan of a small passerine bird: the zebr...

Embryological Staging of the Zebra Finch, Taeniopygia guttata

Zebra Finches (Taeniopygia guttata) are the most commonly used laboratory songbird species, yet their embryological development has been poorly characterized. Most studies to date apply Hamburger and Hamilton stages derived from chicken development; however, significant differences in development between precocial and altricial species suggest that they may not be directly comparable. We provid...

Prolactin is related to individual differences in parental behavior and reproductive success in a biparental passerine, the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

Variation in parental care can lead to important fitness consequences. The endocrine system is known to regulate physiological and behavioral reproductive traits that are important contributors to lifetime reproductive success. However, the hormonal basis of variation in avian parental care is still not well understood. Plasma prolactin (PRL) concentrations are generally high during post-hatch ...
